The brain’s Lymphatic System
The Glymphatic system is the Lymphatic System of the brain.
It’s only been discovered in recent years and we now know sleep is it’s best friend! That’s because studies have shown that the Glymphatic System is primarily active during sleep and largely disengaged during wakefulness.
Sleep is known to be a period when so many biological processes occur (hence why it is so important to get quality sleep daily)! One crucial function during sleep is the enhancement of the Glymphatic System, which helps the brain clear itself of neurotoxic waste products accumulated during wakefulness.
In particular, slow-wave sleep boosts the activity of the Glymphatic System by approximately 60%.
Recent research suggests that low Glymphatic activity may be a significant risk factor for developing neurodegenerative diseases. There is an increasing body of evidence that indicates sleep deprivation and sleep disorders can independently contribute to cognitive impairment and dementia.
In addition to waste clearance, the Glymphatic System is essential for distributing nutrients, such as glucose, throughout the brain. Especially important for those with Diabetes or other glucose related conditions.
Massage can help improve your sleep and so can implementing some sleep hygiene practices such as:
Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
Creating a relaxing bedtime routine eg. sleep music, reading before bed.
Keeping your room cool and comfortable.
Dim the lights once the sunsets, as bright artificial light can mess with your circadian rhythm (sleep wake cycle).
Minimising your screen-time and eliminating screen-time an hour before bed.
Avoid stimulants later in the day, such as caffinated drinks, chocolate, soft drinks.
